How to play Macau: the Romanian rules in five minutes
Five cards each, match the top card, say Macau at one. Here is everything else you need before you sit down.
- Players
- 2 to 4
- Deck
- 52 cards + 2 jokers
- Deal
- 5 cards each
- A turn
- 30 seconds
The goal
Empty your hand first. The first player out wins the round; the others place by the order they finish, and the last one standing takes nothing.
Everything in Macau serves that. The attacks slow the others down, the 4 steals a turn, the ace changes the suit when you have nothing else.
The deal
Everyone gets five cards. One card goes face up to start the discard pile, and it’s never a special card; the rest is the draw pile. The first player is drawn at random, and play goes counter-clockwise.
Your turn
A turn is one of three things:
Play a card that matches
The top card’s suit or its rank. A 9 of clubs on a 9 of hearts is fine; so is a 9 of clubs on a king of clubs.
Or draw one
If the card you drew fits, you may play it at once. If not, your turn is over.
Macau at one card
A play that leaves you a single card calls Macao!, and the app makes the call for you. A missed call costs 5 cards; only bots ever miss it.
Several cards of the same rank can go down together — a 9 of clubs with a 9 of hearts on top counts as one play.
You have 30 seconds a turn, 35 when you could play an ace. When time runs out, the app takes the attack, sits out the skip or draws for you, and after three timeouts you leave the table.
The special cards
| Card | Does | Answer with |
|---|---|---|
| +2 for the next player | A 2, a 3, a joker — or a 7 | |
| +3 for the next player | A 2, a 3, a joker — or a 7 | |
| +5, goes on anything | A 2, a 3, a joker — or a 7 | |
| +10, goes on anything | A 2, a 3, a joker — or a 7 | |
| Cancels the attack aimed at you | — | |
| The next player sits out a turn | Another 4 passes it on | |
| Goes on anything and names the suit | A card of that suit, or another ace |
Finishing and points
The first player out finishes 1st and watches; the rest play on for 2nd, 3rd and 4th. After 150 turns, whoever is still playing is ranked by the cards left. At a public table the places pay points toward the month’s season, and seeds; last place takes neither.
A seven is a shield, not a sword. Hold it until the pile is tall.

Pytania
Can I play a 7 when nobody attacked?
Yes. Then it’s just a 7, matched by suit or rank like any card.
Do jokers have a suit?
No. A joker goes on anything, and once its attack has been answered or taken, anything goes on a joker.
What if the draw pile runs out?
The discard pile is shuffled into a new draw pile; the top card stays.
Do bots call Macau?
Almost always. At public tables a bot forgets about one time in twenty, and draws 5 like anyone would.
