Macau in 12 languages: how we translate a table
The game’s name, the last-card call and the seeds in every language, a display face per script, and three languages that read right to left.
Twelve languages
English, Romanian, German, Spanish, Polish, Serbian, Hungarian, Turkish, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic and Persian. This website speaks all of them except Hungarian, so far.
A name, a call, a seed
The game is Macau in English, Macao in Romanian, German and Spanish, Makao in Polish, Serbian and Turkish, Makaó in Hungarian, Μακάο, מקאו, ماكاو and ماکائو. The call at one card follows the language too:
| Language | Call |
|---|---|
| English, Romanian | Macao! |
| German | Mau-Mau! |
| Polish, Serbian | Makao! |
| Hungarian | Makaó! |
| Spanish | ¡Última! |
| Turkish | Son kart! |
| Greek | Μακάο! |
| Hebrew | מקאו! |
| Arabic | ماكاو! |
| Persian | ماکائو! |
And the sunflower seeds you play for are semințe, Kerne, pipas, pestki, semenke, szotyi, çekirdek, σπόροι, גרעינים, بذور and تخمه.
A face per script
Titles are set in Bangers, which only covers Latin, so Greek gets Fira Sans Extra Condensed, Hebrew Karantina, and Arabic and Persian Lalezar, set 10% larger. Body text is Nunito, with Noto Sans for the scripts it doesn’t cover.
Right to left
Hebrew, Arabic and Persian read right to left, and the app turns its pages around for them.
